Workplace Health and Safety - Using Multimedia Devices

Using the library equipment safely is of paramount importance at Swan Library. Whilst libraries are generally considered low-risk environments, there are still some considerations to keep in mind when using our equipment such as computers, photocopiers and audio devices. As these devices are powered electronically, there are some risk-minimising strategies that need to be adhered to at all times. The staff will ensure that the computers are set up correctly. We will ensure that the space is ergonomically configured, that routine inspections will be conducted on the electrical equipment, and that all equipment is set up safely.

To reduce the risk of fire or electrical hazard library patrons must;

  • Keep liquids away from the electrical equipment.
  • No food or drinks are permitted in the library.
  • Please use our equipment respectfully and for the purpose it is designed.
  • When using equipment that requires cords such as headphones or phone charges, please ensure that all cords are used correctly, untangled, and do not obstruct the equipment in any way.
  • If any faults or error messages should occur, please report them to staff immediately.

Whilst physical injury within the library is unlikely, we ask that patrons adhere to the following guidelines in relation to manual handling and ergonomic equipment.

To reduce the risk of physical injury patrons must;

  • Use a trolley when transporting a large amount of items across the library. Swan library provides number of trolleys for patron near the front entrance.
  • If an item you require is located on a high shelf, please ask staff for assistance and they will safely get the item down for you.
  • Our computers have adjustable screens to suit your height requirements. Our desks and chairs are ergonomic. Please adjust our equipment accordingly and take regular screen breaks to help prevent and injuries.
  • No food or water is permitted in the library. However, if you do notice a spill, please inform staff immediately.

Public Computer Facilities Conditions of Use

The Swan Library has five computers with internet connection and printing facilities for public use. To access these computers, users must be a member of the Swan Library and will need to present their library card to login. Members are able to use the computer facilities for up to 120 minutes per day.

The following conditions must be adhered to when using the computer facilities:

  • Swan Library does not filter access to the Internet but facilities are monitored and all activities are logged. 
  • Unacceptable usage of the public computer facilities and internet searching includes offensive websites, online shopping, pornographic images and content, inappropriate email and communication services, and any further activities that the library may deem as unsuitable for a public space.
  • All property of the Swan Library must remain in it's current condition and any faults are to be reported. Deliberate destruction and damage to the computer facilities may result in disciplinary action or further action being taken.
  • No changes are permitted to be made to the setup or configuration of the computer facilities. This includes downloading unauthorised software applications. 
  • No excessive downloading of movies, music or games.
  • Users must save all of their documents to a portable storage device. Any documents directly saved on to the Swan Library public computer facilities will be deleted.
